The Crusaders Basketball Academy based at The Canterbury High School picked up their 2nd win in the British Colleges Elite Division on Wednesday defeating West Kent College. This means they are 2 for 2. The game ended in the third quarter in bizarre circumstances as West Kent’s coach Joel Moore decided to forfeit the game and leave part way through.
With Canterbury High leading 60-43 early in the third quarter, West Kent called a time out. During the timeout Moore seemed to be arguing with the refs and picked up a technical foul. At this point he made the decision to quit.
Crusaders Coach Jesse Sazant couldn’t understand what had happened stating, ” I don’t really know what the issue was. West Kent picked up 3 technical fouls spread over the course of the game. It is really not for me to comment upon other teams and anyway more fouls had been called against us than West Kent.”
Canterbury High had taken control of the game right from the opening tip, as back to back 3s from Andy Chiguiri and Tom Humphrey gave them a 10-2 lead. The lead was quickly stretched to 22-6 as a series of turnovers by West Kent
led to easy transition baskets for the Crusaders. West Kent briefly rallied at the end of the quarter as a 6-0 run helped cut the lead to 34-20 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Crusaders again asserted themselves, stretching the lead to 20 points as they held West Kent to 3 points over a 6 minute stretch. The lead remained at 20 at halftime, with Canterbury High up 53-33. West Kent briefly started to chip away early in the third as a 7 point run cut the lead to 58-43. The Crusaders added another basket to take the lead to 60-43 before the peculiar finish to the match.
Humphrey and Kalil Irving were joint top scorers for Canterbury High with 14 points each. Ibrahim Omer, Chiguiri and Disraeli Lufadeju added 7 each.
Sazant later added, “I found the whole situation embarrassing and felt sorry for the West Kent boys. This is supposed to be school sport. The message this sends to young people is against everything we believe in at out academy.”
