BA London Leopards- 93, Medway Park Crusaders- 75

(April 15)

Report by Nick Moore

Despite Kalil Irving’s game-high 26 points, the Medway Park Crusaders failed to overcome the BA London Leopards and advance through to the semi-finals of the EBL Division One Playoffs.

The youngsters’ impressive points haul was Medway’s highlight when the two sides clashed in their crucial playoff match at Basildon Sporting Village, on April 15.

But the Leopards, who were the number one seeded team, winning their last 17 league games in a row, proved just too strong the Kent-based team, who have surprised everyone and even themselves this year.

Crusaders coach, James Vear, was disappointed that they couldn’t advance any further, but was incredibly proud of his teams’ efforts throughout their long campaign.

He said: “Unfortunately we didn’t play well enough today to pull off the upset. You need to play your best and we didn’t do that today.

“The players still gave there all and I’m proud of them for the season they have had and the way they have adapted to the level of play in our first season in Division One.”

The game on Sunday started in quick fashion. The League’s top scorer, Vernon Teel fired the Leopards into a quick 6-0 lead and they went on to take the first 10 minutes, 30-21 – Teel went on to hit a triple-double of 16 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists to steal the show.

His side increased their lead in the second, to 53-38, as they London side dominated the boards and Medway failed to punish them from the free throw line.

Despite the Crusaders battling hard to close the gap in third quarter, the Leopards took it 30-13 to put the tie beyond reach. Their lead went out to 83-52 and all hope of a Medway comeback looked impossible.

But, as they have so often done this year, Vear’s side battled to the end and showed how strong a unit they can be when they get their flow going.

The Kent side took the final 10 minutes 24-10, to close the final gap to 18 points, valiantly losing 93-75.

Shooting guard, Luke Baker, hit 13, and point guard, Steve Vear,  hit 10.

Crusaders Chairman, Jesse Sazant, who has been the driving force behind the side for the past few seasons was incredibly proud of his side’s efforts and noted that his Coach deserved special recognition.

He said: “Credit needs to be given to James Vear for the fantastic job he has done establishing us in Division One.

“With the huge turnover of players through the season he has done a great job in getting us to the play-offs and a 500 record in our inaugural EBL1 season.”

And so, the road this season ends here for the Medway boys.

It’s been a superb year for the Kent side but here’s hoping they can make it even further next time out.

Crusaders on 3…..!!

Medway Park Crusaders- 112, Tees Valley Mohawks- 60

(April 07)

Report by Nick Moore

Disraeli Lufadeju top scored for the Medway Park Crusaders on a night which saw them clinch their place in the EBL Division One Playoffs.

‘Dizzy’ as he is known, collected 20 points and 4 assists as his Medway side romped to their highest point’s victory of the season, eclipsing the Tees Valley Mohawks 112-60, on Saturday night at Medway Park Leisure Centre.

The vital win for James Vear’s side see them secure the 8th seed spot in the playoffs, and set themselves up with a clash against league toppers, the BA London Leopards.

Vear, who became only the second Crusaders coach in history to register 40 career wins, was ecstatic with the result.

He said: “It was such a great team effort today! To have eight out of nine guys get double figures just shows you how unselfish we were.

“I am really happy for the players who have had a lot of ups and downs this season. They have worked so hard to get us to this point and all the credit should go to them.”

Before the match tipped off though, the Crusaders qualification hopes were still partly out of their hands.

They had to hope that Leeds Carnegie, who had a game in hand, would lose to either the Leicester Warriors or the Reading Rockets in a weekend of double fixtures otherwise it would go down to points difference, and then head-to-heads.

Luckily for Vear’s side though, Leeds lost 97-85 on the road to the Warriors, guaranteeing the Crusaders a playoff place.

Medway, who made sure that they kept up their side of the bargain, dominated the Mohawks from start to finish. They led 56-24 at half time and streaked to their highest point’s total of the year.

Top-scorer, Lufadeju, was closely followed on the night by Adrian Fenyn (18), Captain, James Harris (14) and Luke Baker (13).

Steve Vear picked up nine more assists, making him the Crusaders career leader in assists with 210 – breaking Damian Lyons’ record.

Medway take on the BA London Leopards on April 15 in their crucial playoff match at 4:00pm, at Basildon Sporting Village.

Last time out, the Leopards clinched a 78-61 win, but back in December, Medway downed them 93-83, tying the series at 1 apiece.

Coach Vear knows that in the one-off game anything can happen: “The pressure will be off us being the 8th seed but we will go into the game knowing we have a chance if we play our best basketball.”

One thing’s for sure, the clash is going to be an epic battle next Sunday, with the winner progressing to the playoff final fours in Manchester.

Medway Park Crusaders- 98, Derby Trailblazers- 82

(March, 24)

Report by Nick Moore

Adrian Fenyn was once again the stand-out man for the Medway Park Crusaders as they romped to an emphatic win over the Derby Trailblazers, on Sunday 24.

Fenyn, Medway’s American star, hit a double-double of 21 points and 19 rebounds in Sunday evenings clash with the travelling East Midland side – his strong rebounding tally was the clubs second highest by an individual in one game.

The 16 point win saw the Kent side bounce back from a disappointing 102-59 loss against the Bristol Academy Flyers the weekend before, and they now occupy the 8th and final playoff spot in EBL Division One.

With a record of 50% (11 wins and 11 losses), they only have to see off the remaining two games to qualify for the playoffs – the top eight doing so.

They sit four points ahead of 9th place Brixton Topcats, and only an unforeseeable amount of bad luck will deny them a playoff spot.

Medway take on bottom of the league, Westminster Warriors on March 31, followed by the Tees Valley Mohawks on April 7.

Last time out, Westminster piped the Crusaders 81-74 in a closely fought battle, but James Vear’s side beat the Mohawks 79-61 in a strong performance on the road.

Coach Vear will be hoping his side hold out for the remainder of the season and gain that vital playoff spot.

He said: “We just need to make sure we work even harder in practice and treat every game from here on out like it’s a cup final.”

He added: “I believe the group of players we have can beat any team in the division on our day.

“From here on out we just need to make sure we prepare for each game correctly and leave everything on the court in our last two games.”

On Sunday, leading scorer Fenyn was closely followed by point guard, Steve Vear (18), Dizzy Lufadeju (16) and Luke Baker (14).

Fenyn is now 7th for points scored in one season and needs 18 more to move into 6th place.

Steve Vear collected eight more assists on Sunday, surpassing his total from last season – and is now just 11 short of breaking the record for the number of assists made in a season.

Medway Park Crusaders- 77, Bradford Dragons- 61

(March, 10)

Medway Park Crusaders- 61, Leeds Carnegie- 66

(March, 11)

Report by Nick Moore

Adrian Fenyn led the scoring for the Medway Park Crusaders as mixed weekend of results sees the Kent side still holding on to a playoff place.

Fenyn, Medway’s American star, hit 22 points in Saturday’s 77-61 win over the Bradford Dragons and 17 in their 66-61 loss to an in-form Leeds Carnegie side on Sunday.

Medway Park now sit in 7th place in EBL Division One, with a record of 50% (10 wins and 10 losses), and only have to see off the remaining four games to qualify for the playoffs – the top eight doing so.

Their recent form has been unlike their usual rampant self, with James Vear’s side only winning two from their last seven – they eclipsed the Brixton Topcats 78-69 on February 26.

But with losses to joint league leaders Worthing Thunder and BA London Leopards, as well as Reading Rockets, Leicester Warriors, and now Leeds Carnegie they have everything to prove next week against third place Bristol Academy Flyers.

Vear knows that it’s been a tough couple of months for his side, who lost one of their main talisman and a very influential figure in Joseph Schow.

He said: “We have also had some injuries at key positions, but we haven’t used this as an excuse though. We just need to make sure we work even harder in practice and treat every game from here on out like it’s a cup final.”

He added that he is still confident they can get into the playoffs: “I believe the group of players we have can beat any team in the division on our day.

“From here on out we just need to make sure we prepare for each game correctly and leave everything on the court in our last four games.”

On Saturday, a poor third quarter from the Bradford Dragons cost them as Medway Park Crusaders recorded the home win.

Medway lead 32-25 heading into the second half, and went on a 26-11 run in the third to see out the win.

Dragons coach, Chris Mellor said: “We didn’t play a good game and we didn’t create our usual atmosphere defensively or offensively.

“Our shot selection and completion rate was very poor. They were good though, they shot and ran the ball really well and defended and rebounded better than us.”

Rihards Sulcs led Bradford with 23 points while Steve Vear followed Fenyn with 18.

On Sunday, Leeds took the season series 2-0, after their close win at Medway Park. The away side went into the half 27-26 up, and a final quarter win of just four points meant they closed the narrow tie out.

While Fenyn led the scoring for the Crusaders, Josh Houghton (18) led the way for Carnegie.

Steve Vear is now third for assists in a season, one behind his total from last year and 18 behind Canadian Simon Mitchell. He has also moved into second for career assists, 11 behind Damian Lyons.

Sam Betts has become second Crusader to gather over 100 points, field goals, free throws, 3 pointers, rebounds and assists, following James Harris, who became the first person to achieve it earlier this season.

Medway take on Bristol this weekend on the road. The Crusaders downed the Flyers 84-79 in the reverse fixture, in December at Medway Park and will be hoping for a repeat of that this time out.

Ipswich Tomcats 65-52 Medway Park Crusaders
(Report: Kieran Dhillon)

On Saturday 3rd March, the Crusaders U14 team were away to a very tough Ipswich Tomcats team led by the 6’7 England centre and a number of other regional players.
A sizeable, partisan home crowd failed to intimidate the Crusaders team who were only 14-13 down after the first quarter. Continued, organised defence by the Crusaders ensured the score stayed close at the half.
During the third quarter, Kieran Dhillon and Mike Fieldsend continued to lead the offence with strong, aggressive driving and good shooting, enabling the lead to be cut to 44-38 after three quarters. With the defence holding strong and Simon Makinde keeping the Ipswich centre quiet, Ipswich were forced into shooting from the perimeter.
In a tough, physical fourth quarter, Crusaders kept the game tight but could not close the gap. The final score of 65-52 flattered Ipswich somewhat.
Crusaders’ scoring was led by Kieran Dhillon 23 points and Mike Fieldsend with a season high 20 points.
Next weekend Crusaders U14s have a double header at home against Milton Keynes Lions on Saturday and Baddow Eagles on Sunday.
