The Medway Park Crusaders now know exactly what they’re facing in their inaugural season in EBL1 with the release of the draft fixtures.

Their opening task couldn’t be any greater as they open up with a National Trophy game away to defending EBL1 play-off champions Reading Rockets.  Medway Park came up against Reading in the 3rd round of the National Cup two seasons, losing a close game 81-73.  The match-up with Reading has some extra intrigue as former Crusader Robbie Parker now plays for Reading.

Overall, Medway Park will be competing on three fronts next season: the National Cup, National Trophy and EBL1 League and Play-offs.

The Medway Park Crusaders have made their first two new signings as they look to develop and bolster their squad for their first season in EBL1.

Gareth Laws, a 6’2 Guard, joins Crusaders after a season off with injury problems.  Laws is well known in the basketball community having played for London Towers and Plymouth Raiders in the BBL, and London Leopards, Sutton Pumas and Hackney White Heat in EBL1.

Laws has won numerous cups and trophies in his career, and brings a great deal of experience to the team.  This experience is something Head Coach James Vear thinks will be a real asset.  “Gareth has played the highest level in this country and has accomplished a lot in his basketball career so far.  He is another great shooter to add to the roster and he has a great basketball IQ.  He has had some unfortunate injuries over the past two seasons but in the small amount of time he has been training with us you can see he is starting to get his fitness back and I can see him being a great pick up for the team.”

Medway Park Crusaders have begun perpetrations for their first season in EBL1 with the recommitment of 4 key players.  James Harris, Akeem Abdul, Disraeli Lufadeju and Tom Raymen have all committed to another season with Crusaders.

Crusaders Head Coach James Vear is thrilled with the first commitments saying, “It’s great we have four returning players from last year.  I’m sure these players mixed with players we are bringing in we will have a great mix of youth and experience and we will be able to compete in Division 1″

Harris, a 6’0 guard, is the club’s longest serving active player.  He played in Crusaders very first game and is now the club’s leading career scorer.  He also holds club records for 3 pointers in a career, season and game. Early next season he will also claim the club record for career games.

Harris is looking forward to the next step in his career at Crusaders, “I’m going into my 8th season with the club, and probably haven’t got that many left, so it’s been a great journey going from Div 3 to the top level.  I think we can definitely compete with all the teams in Div 1.  I can’t wait to get started!!!”

Medway Park Crusaders have launched a second 6th form academy based at Northfleet Technology College near Gravesend.  The satellite academy will compliment the Crusaders original academy based at the Canterbury High School.

The Crusaders academy in Northfleet will follow a similar model to their existing academy.  It will be focused on individual development and helping players fulfill their potential through daily coaching and skill development, strength and conditioning and competitive opportunities.

The work that head coach Martin Parry had already done with the existing academy at Northfleet made it an easy decision for Crusaders to link up.  Crusaders Chairman Jesse Sazant said, “Northfleet sent a number of players to Crusaders the past few years.  They always arrived with the right attitude and motivation to get better.  It seemed an obvious link for us to help support and develop their programme and for their players to keep benefitting from playing national league basketball.”

Two of Medway Park Crusaders junior players have recently tasted international success. Both Liam Carpenter (6’1 Guard) and Dave Couchman (6’7 Centre) recently travelled to Denmark to take part in the Copenhagen Invitational Tournament as part of the England under 15 national team.

At the tournament, England won 2 of their 3 group games to advance to the semi-finals before eventually finishing 4th. Carpenter started in all 5 games for England, with his highest scoring game coming against Iceland where he scored 8 points. Liam found the experience very rewarding, saying, “I learned how to play at the next level. It was a massive step up from national league.”
